Basic Disclosure - Online Check

What are DBS Checks?

Formally known as CRB Checks, DBS Checks work in exactly the same way, as a means to assist employers in making informed recruitment decisions. Carrying out DBS checks online allows businesses to help safeguard their organisation by preventing unsuitable candidates from working with vulnerable people. The DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) was formed after the merge of the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) and ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority) in December 2012.

There are 3 different levels of DBS Check;

Basic DBS Check

A Basic DBS Check or Basic Disclosure is available to anyone living in England and/or Wales and is a search carried out by the Disclosure & Barring Service. It is a search to check for any unspent convictions or conditional cautions on an applicant’s criminal history, allowing them to present to an employer in order to make an informed hire. If you live and/or work in Scotland, please call us to apply for a search through Disclosure Scotland.

Standard DBS Check

A Standard DBS Check is processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It searches an applicant’s criminal history to identify any convictions, both spent and unspent, cautions, warnings and reprimands. This level of check is only available for employers to obtain on behalf of their employees.

Enhanced DBS Check

The Enhanced DBS Check is also processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and this too searches the applicants’ criminal history for any cautions, warnings, reprimands or convictions (both spent and unspent).

In addition, the Enhanced Check also searches the children and vulnerable adults ‘barred lists’ to see if the applicant is barred from working with those groups. There is also an area within the Enhanced DBS Check Certificate where local police can add any relevant information they may hold about the applicant.

This level of check is only available for employers to obtain on behalf of their employees.

How many types of DBS Check are there?

There are 3 different types of DBS checks; Basic, Standard and Enhanced. Basic disclosures can be applied for by an individual, whilst Standard and Enhanced DBS checks are carried out by employers on their employees and, in some cases, volunteers.

Who can apply for a DBS Check?

The level of DBS Check an applicant is eligible for depends on the role the person is carrying out and who is applying for the check. Individuals can only apply for a Basic DBS Check for themselves.

Organisations can apply for Basic, Standard and Enhanced Checks for employees/volunteers in order to help them make hiring decisions. However, they may only apply for Standard and Enhanced DBS Checks on behalf of their employees/volunteers if applicants meet certain eligibility criteria. You can find the DBS eligibility criteria here.

How long does a DBS Check take?

Once the applications have been countersigned and submitted to the DBS, the time it takes for DBS Checks to be processed can vary on a case by case basis. At Personnel Checks, approximately 30% of checks are completed within a day and around 50% of our DBS Checks are completed within a week.

If you currently have a DBS Check in progress, you can track your application here

How often do DBS Checks need to be done?

There is no official expiry date on a DBS check as any information included is accurate at the time the check was completed. The frequency of renewals is determined by each individual organisation or governing body, with time scales varying from every six months to every three years.

Do volunteers need DBS Checks?

By law there is no requirement for volunteers to have a DBS Check, this is determined by the organisation where the volunteer is working. Standard and Enhanced DBS Checks are available at a reduced rate for volunteers, provided the applicant meets the volunteer criteria specified by the DBS.
