What are BPSS Checks?

BPSS is a type of pre-employment screening for people working in government departments. BPSS is one of the most common types of screening carried out in the UK. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about BPSS Checks.

What does BPSS Stand for?

BPSS stands for Baseline Personnel Security Standard. It is the standard security check for anyone working with, or with access to government assets.

This means that BPSS applies to all civil servants, members of the armed forces, temporary staff in government departments, and any government contractors generally. This is why BPSS is a common requirement for firms in the tech or construction sectors.

What are BPSS Checks?

BPSS Checks are not a single type of background check. Rather, they are a group of checks that give the recruiting organisation a clear picture of who they are employing.

BPSS Checks are needed by anyone working within government departments and for anyone needing access to:

  • UK Official assets and occasional access to UK Secret assets.

  • Areas where SECRET and TOP SECRET information may be overheard.

  • The Public Services Network (PSN).

What does a BPSS Check include?

BPSS Checks include a range of different background checks. These are:

  • Identity Checks

  • 3 Year Occupation History Checks

  • Right to work Checks

  • Unspent Conviction Check (Basic DBS Check

Some organisations may compliment the basic BPSS checks with additional searches such as references and medical checks.

How long do BPSS Checks take?

BPSS Checks can usually be done very quickly. The quickest they can be turned around is 24 hours but on average they between 3-7 days.

However, Basic DBS Checks are subject to Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) turnaround times. They advise that Basic DBS Checks should be completed within 14 days.

Who can do BPSS Checks?

BPSS Checks can be requested by any employer, even if your staff aren’t working in government areas. Many organisations choose to vet their employees this way as a matter of best practice. BPSS is simply a standard rather than a specific type of security clearance.
