A Comprehensive Guide to DBS Checks for Music Tutors and Agencies

At Personnel Checks, we understand the importance of safeguarding in the music education sector. DBS checks, or Disclosure and Barring Service checks, are a crucial part of this process.

They help to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable groups, including children, by preventing unsuitable individuals from working with these groups.

Understanding the Need for DBS Checks in Music Education

Whether you’re a music tutor or you run a music tutor agency, understanding DBS Checks is essential. The vast majority of music tutoring involves working with children or young adults. Working with children and vulnerable adults brings a heightened responsibility for their safety. DBS checks are an essential part of ensuring these individuals are protected.

Not only are they a regulatory requirement, but they also reassure parents and guardians about the safety of their children and enhance your credibility as a tutor or agency. In the absence of a DBS check, you may face legal action, reputational damage, and potential barriers to employment.

Types of DBS Checks

There are several types of DBS checks, each serving a different purpose:

  • Basic Disclosure: This is the minimum level of check, revealing any unspent convictions.

  • Standard DBS: This check reveals both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.

  • Enhanced DBS: This check includes everything in the Standard DBS, plus any additional information held by local police deemed relevant to the role.

  • Enhanced DBS with Barred Lists: This includes everything in the Enhanced DBS, plus a check of the children's and/or adults' barred lists.

For most music tutors, it is the last type of check that is required. This is because they regularly work with children, often in an unsupervised context.

DBS Checks for Different Regions

The process for obtaining DBS checks varies slightly depending on the region:

  • In England and Wales, the Disclosure and Barring Service handles DBS checks.

  • In Scotland, individuals working with vulnerable groups must join the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme, run by Disclosure Scotland

  • In Northern Ireland, AccessNI provides criminal history information.

Personnel Checks are a registered Umbrella Body for the DBS, Disclosure Scotland and Access NI. We can assist you with your criminal record checks, no matter where you are in the UK.

Applying for a DBS Check

Applying for a DBS check with Personnel Checks is a streamlined process. You complete an online application form, upload your ID documents, and, then we do the rest. Simple as that.

The DBS also offers an Update Service for an annual fee, which keeps your DBS check up to date and allows employers to check your certificate online.

If you're a self-employed music tutor, it's still crucial to obtain a DBS check but the process is a bit more difficult. Enhanced DBS Checks are a tool designed for employers, who need to make a suitability decision on a current or potential employee. This means that self-employed music tutors cannot apply directly for this level of check.

If you need an Enhanced DBS Check as a self-employed music tutor, there are a couple of options. You can either register with an agency, who will be able to conduct the check on your behalf. Alternatively, you may be able to contact your local authority who could then complete the check.

If you aren’t working with children, then it could just be a Basic DBS Check that you need. In that case, you can get your application submitted in as little as ten minutes, just click here.
